Muay Thai culture and styles: wai kru, mongkol, muay boran, sak yant

Muay Thai culture comes down to a few things you will see at every gym and stadium: the wai kru and ram muay, the bow and dance to honour teachers before each fight; the mongkol headband and prajioud armbands worn for it; and the older muay boran styles (Chaiya, Korat, Lopburi, Tha Sao) that modern Muay Thai grew from. Sak yant, the sacred tattoo many people first see on fighters, is a religious practice and not part of the sport. Each page below is sourced, with the date we read it.

The wai kru and ram muay, in brief

Before the first round, both fighters pay respect to their teachers (the wai kru), then perform a dance (the ram muay). TAT says the ritual reportedly goes back to the Sukhothai kingdom, and explains the words: wai is the Thai greeting with palms together, kru comes from the Sanskrit guru (teacher), ram means classical dance and muay means boxing (TAT newsroom, 15 Mar 2017, read 2 Nov 2026). Under IFMA rules every athlete must perform the wai kru (rule 20.1), with at least two postures and three bows to the canvas while wearing the mongkol (rule 20.2).
