Muay Thai gear

Last reviewed 10 Oct 2026

Muay Thai gear and muay thai shop are each searched 1,600 times a month in the UK (Keyword Planner, 10 Oct 2026). Buy wraps and gloves first. At catalogue prices from 8 Oct 2026 that pair sums to £58.98. Shin guards wait until partner work. The sparring-ready sum is £126.96.

Key facts:

  • Catalogue date for every pound figure on this page: 8 Oct 2026. Confirm each shelf price on the day you buy.
  • Four model baskets: first class £58.98, sparring-ready £126.96, Thai-made standard £250.96, serious £340.96.
  • No mouthguard price is in the catalogue. No ankle-support price either.
  • We have not lab-tested a product. Nothing on this page is a "best" award.
  • Fairtex and Twins have catalogue prices. Yokkao lists Sak Yant gloves at £129 to £159 by weight on yokkao.com (checked 23 Oct 2026). Buy all three from an authorised retailer.

Buy in this order

  1. Nothing, for the trial. Shorts you can kick in, a T-shirt, water, a towel. Ask if the gym lends gloves.
  2. Hand wraps, 4.5 m if you are buying the length we can price, then your own gloves in the ounce the gym will actually let you spar in. Most UK gyms ask for 16oz for sparring. That sentence is Atlas copy from 8 Oct 2026, not a statute.
  3. A mouthguard before partner work. We cannot price it from this catalogue.
  4. Shin guards and a groin guard when knees and partner drills start. The budget versions are in the sparring-ready basket.
  5. Shorts you like, ankle sleeves, a bag for home. Shorts have no dated catalogue price in this extract. A short is not the first purchase.

Buy by level

Your first class

Wear shorts and a T-shirt, bring water. Ask if the gym lends gloves. Buy nothing yet. What to expect at your first class and the beginner kit list.

First three months

Wraps (4.5 m) and your own 14-16oz gloves first, then a gum shield. Shin guards once your gym starts partner drills. The starter kit, the glove size tool and how to wrap hands.

Starting to spar

16oz gloves are the usual UK sparring rule; check your gym's. Add shin guards with instep cover, a groin guard and a fitted gum shield. Headguard only if your gym asks. 16oz sparring gloves, shin guards and the first sparring session.

First interclub or fight

Your promoter or club sets the rules on gloves (often 10oz or 12oz by weight), shorts and headguards. Don't buy fight gloves until you have a bout. Interclub to first fight and rules and rounds.

Going to a Thai camp

Camps usually have gloves and pads. Bring your own wraps, gum shield and shin guards if you have them; shorts are cheap there. What to pack for a camp and the Camp Planner.

The four baskets

Each row is the catalogue's own price. The total is addition. Gumshields are missing because the catalogue has no price for them.

"Thai-made" describes where those Fairtex and Twins rows are attributed in the catalogue notes (Thailand). It is not a claim that every stitch was audited. Twins BGVL3 maker specs have not been re-verified on the Twins site. Fairtex BGV1 specs were: genuine leather, three-layer foam, tight fit, short wrist, 8 to 16oz, on fairtex.com, read 10 Oct 2026.

The first-class basket is £58.98 if shin guards are still borrowed. The sparring-ready basket is £126.96. The Thai-made basket is £250.96. We will not say the dearer kit lasts longer. We did not wear it out.

The illustration shows a full kit bag with extras; the £340.96 basket prices gloves, wraps, shin guards and a groin guard only.

Shin guards in the catalogue

The shin-guard catalogue prices recorded on 8 Oct 2026, not re-verified since, are RDX Shin Instep Aura Plus T-17 £40.99, Fairtex SP5 £89.99 and Twins SGL10 £144.99. Other models are not given a price here. Sock versus strap is the shin-guard guide.

What the gym lends, and what it will not

Many UK gyms lend gloves for a trial. The directory does not yet give a counted share of gyms that say so on their own page, so we will not invent "most gyms lend gloves" as a statistic. Ask the gym you are visiting. Wraps are cheap and personal. A borrowed wrap is a damp wrap. Buy your own when you know you are staying.

Headguards are a gym rule, not a default purchase. Fight gloves, often lighter, wait until a promoter or a club has a bout and a ruleset. We have not re-read fight-glove weights by ruleset for this page. Do not buy 10oz gloves off this hub.

Buying in Thailand

Camps often have gloves and pads. Wraps, a mouthguard and shin guards are the items worth having in your bag on day one. Shorts are widely sold there. Street prices, how common fakes are, and the UK customs allowance were not verified on a GOV.UK page for this hub. This hub stays price-free on those three points. Buy Fairtex, Twins and Yokkao from an authorised shop, not from a stranger's blanket, and keep the receipt.

We do not earn from links on this page. We do not link marketplaces for Fairtex, Twins or Yokkao.

The guides under this hub

What this hub will not do

It will not rank a glove we have not worn. It will not take a fee to move a row up the table. It will not send you to a marketplace for Fairtex, Twins or Yokkao. It will not convert a Thai shop price into pounds, because we did not collect those prices. It will not tell you a leather glove prevents injury. Padding is why sparring gloves are heavier. That is a rules and gym habit, not a medical outcome.

If a price on this page disagrees with the retailer on the day you buy, the retailer is the current price. Catalogue prices checked 8 Oct 2026; the Fairtex page checked 10 Oct 2026. Retailer prices move, so the live price on the day you buy is the current one.

Categories, when the shop is switched on

Kit splits into gloves, shin guards, wraps, protection, shorts, pads, headgear, apparel, focus mitts and mouthguards. This hub is the guide. Mouthguards are called out because the catalogue has no price, which is exactly why a grid without a price would be worse than a sentence that says so.

Pads and a focus-mitt pair are a coach's tools more often than a beginner's. Do not buy mitts so you can "train with a friend" in a car park. Holding pads badly is how fingers get bent. Learn it in the gym first. Headgear is the same: a gym rule, not a default line on the receipt.

The glove size tool walks through the same questions. Most UK gyms ask for 16oz for sparring (Atlas guidance, 8 Oct 2026), and your gym can say otherwise.

FAQs

What Muay Thai gear do I need for the first class?

Shorts you can kick in, a T-shirt, water and a towel. Ask if the gym lends gloves before you buy any. If you are staying, the first purchases are hand wraps and your own gloves. On the 8 Oct 2026 catalogue those list prices are £18.99 and £39.99, a model total of £58.98. A mouthguard comes before partner work. We have no mouthguard price in the catalogue.

How much does beginner Muay Thai kit cost in the UK?

Four model baskets, added from catalogue prices dated 8 Oct 2026: first class £58.98, sparring-ready £126.96, Thai-made standard £250.96, and a Twins list-price row at £340.96. Confirm each shelf price on the day. These totals leave out a mouthguard because we do not have a price. They are not a claim that the dearer bag of kit lasts longer.

Do UK gyms require 16oz gloves?

Atlas copy recorded on 8 Oct 2026 says most UK gyms ask for 16oz for sparring. That is a habit we wrote down, not a law. Fairtex's own chart calls 16oz the standard sparring size for most adults and 14oz a general training size. Your coach can override both. Lighter gloves are a competition decision, not a Tuesday decision.

Should I buy Fairtex or Twins first?

Neither, if you have not done the trial. The £39.99 RDX pair is the first-class glove in the catalogue. Fairtex BGV1 is £114.99 and Twins BGVL3 is £149.99 on the same list. We opened Fairtex's spec page and did not open a matching Twins page, and we have not wear-tested either. Authorised retailers only. The comparison page keeps the gaps visible.
