Sak yant: what the Thai sacred tattoo means
Sak yant is a sacred tattoo from mainland Southeast Asia, common in Thailand: sak is a Khmer word for tattoo, and yant comes from the Sanskrit yantra, a sacred design. Designs mix geometry, animals and deities with Pali or Khmer script, and the wearer is meant to keep certain rules so the tattoo keeps its power (Wikipedia). Wat Bang Phra in Nakhon Pathom, about 50 km west of Bangkok, is known for it and holds a Wai Khru festival each March. It is a religious practice, not part of Muay Thai's rules.

What the words mean
- Sak is a Khmer word for tattoo, from a root meaning "to prick". Yant comes from the Sanskrit yantra, a sacred design (Wikipedia).
- Designs mix geometry, animals and deities with short phrases in Pali, Khmer or Northern Thai script. Wikipedia links the practice to the Khmer Empire around the 9th century, and says it is now common in Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and parts of Myanmar.
- It is traditionally pricked into the skin with a long needle (Wikipedia). Our glossary entry: sak yant.
It comes with rules
Wikipedia says the practice is governed by strict rules meant to keep the tattoo's spiritual power, and that the wearer must keep certain taboos, such as avoiding some foods. The rules differ by teacher and design, so ask the person who gives it what applies to yours. It is a religious practice: treat it as one.
Wat Bang Phra and the March Wai Khru
- Wat Bang Phra is a Buddhist monastery in Nakhon Chai Si district, Nakhon Pathom, about 50 km west of Bangkok. Its resident monks give sak yant (Wikipedia).
- Its former abbot, Luang Phor Pern (Phra Udom Prachanart), is credited with mastering protective sak yant. He died in 2002, aged 79.
- Once a year, in March, the temple holds a Wai Khru festival: disciples honour their teachers and the spirit of Luang Phor Pern, and tattoos are blessed and "re-empowered", because their power is believed to fade.
- The day changes each year. We found no official page with the 2027 date, so we don't print one. Like the wai kru before a fight, the name means paying respect to your teacher.
Before you get one
- Your health. The UK's travel health service says hepatitis B can be passed on by tattooing, and advises avoiding tattoos and skin piercing unless sterile equipment is used (TravelHealthPro, factsheet updated 5 Jun 2025). Ask your GP or a travel clinic about vaccines before you go.
- Training. A new tattoo is an open wound. Ask your coach before you train, spar or swim with one.
- Respect. It is sacred to the people who give and wear it. Ask before you photograph anyone's tattoo or a ceremony.
- We don't recommend anyone. Muay Thai Atlas names no tattoo studios or masters and takes no payment from any.
Sak yant and Muay Thai
Many people first see sak yant on fighters, but it is separate from the sport. The things a fighter wears for the ritual are the mongkol and prajioud, and the ritual itself is the wai kru and ram muay. Meet the fighters: fighter profiles.
