Bag gloves, training gloves and sparring gloves: what's the difference?
Most beginners need one pair of training gloves in the ounce their gym asks for to spar; Fairtex's own size chart (read 10 Oct 2026) calls 16oz the standard sparring size for most adults. Bag mitts and fight gloves are extras, not a first buy.

Four kinds of glove
| Kind | What it is | When you use it |
|---|---|---|
| Bag mitts | thin, light gloves | bag work only; not for hitting people |
| Training gloves | all-round gloves | bag, pads and, in the right ounce, sparring |
| Sparring gloves | training gloves in the ounce your gym names | partner work |
| Fight gloves | light competition gloves | only when a show's rules say so |
"Sparring glove" is mostly an ounce, not a separate product. Fairtex's own size chart (read 10 Oct 2026) puts 8oz to 10oz on competition, 14oz on general training and 16oz as standard sparring for most adults. Your coach's rule beats the chart.

What to buy first
- Ask if the gym lends gloves for the first sessions.
- Ask the sparring ounce. Write it down.
- Buy one training glove in that ounce, in a model whose size list includes it.
- Bag mitts later, if you do a lot of bag work on your own.

Questions
Can I use bag gloves for sparring?
No. Bag mitts are thin; sparring needs the padded ounce your gym asks for.
What gloves do I need for pad work?
Your training gloves. You don't need a separate pair for pads.
Are training gloves and sparring gloves different?
Often it's the same glove in a heavier ounce. Fairtex's size chart calls 16oz standard sparring for most adults (read 10 Oct 2026).
What size gloves should I get?
The ounce your gym names. Use the glove size tool; we don't publish a bodyweight chart.
