Benefits of Muay Thai: what the evidence says (and what is just opinion)
Muay Thai classes can count towards the NHS target of 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous activity a week; one small 2025 trial of 50 inactive young men found six weeks of Muay Thai (three 90-minute sessions a week) improved self-reported quality of life and self-control, but the evidence is small and short.

Fitness: the NHS target
NHS adult guidance (nhs.uk, page last reviewed 22 May 2024, read 2 Nov 2026): at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week, or 75 minutes of vigorous activity, plus strengthening activities on at least 2 days a week, spread over 4 to 5 days or every day. Two 60-minute classes is 120 minutes; three is 180. How hard a class is depends on the class.
What one trial found
Şahin and colleagues, Frontiers in Psychology 2025 (doi:10.3389/fpsyg.2025.1584160): 50 healthy, inactive young men, split into a Muay Thai group and a group that carried on as normal. Six weeks, three 1.5-hour sessions a week.
- The Muay Thai group's self-reported quality-of-life scores rose (physical by 13.23%, mental by 21.93%), as did its self-control scores.
- Limits the authors list: small sample, men only, one university, six weeks only. The results are questionnaires, not lab tests.
Claims we mark as opinion
- "Builds confidence": many people say so; we found no strong study for general adults. Opinion.
- "Good for self-defence": see is Muay Thai good for self-defence? Opinion and context, not a study.
- "Burns X calories a class": we print no number. It depends on the person and the class.
The downsides
- You can get hurt, as in any contact sport. See is Muay Thai safe?
- Sparring involves blows to the head. Ask how your gym runs it.
- Cost and time: see your first year in the UK.
