The Birmingham Muay Thai scene

Muay Thai Birmingham is a club circuit, not a stadium city. The same gyms usually teach boxing, Brazilian jiu-jitsu or MMA, and shows are interclubs rather than a weekly night.

K-Star’s Perry Barr gym, 54 College Road, B44 8BS, says it has taught Muay Thai for over 25 years. It is open seven days, with matted rooms, a cage, a ring and a free beginners’ trial. The city-centre gym is at 40–41 MacDonald Street, B5 6TG. Aldridge, Quinton, Sheldon and Walsall are also on the menu.

Fearless MMA, 39 Hospital Street, Hockley, B19 3PU, dates from 2009 and was founded by Kaish and Kamby Banger. Thai boxing is taught with wrestling, no-gi jiu-jitsu, K1 and MMA, in a gym described as having a cage, a ring and over 3,000 square feet of mat. Cobra Muay Thai, 88 Cato Street North, Nechells, B7 5AN, offers a free first lesson for all ages, including sparring and one-to-one work, under Muhammed Zahir (Leko Wright). Black Widow, 858 Washwood Heath Road, Ward End, B8 2NL, teaches Muay Thai with MMA, boxing and jiu-jitsu, from beginners to fighters.

When to go

The climate is temperate maritime. Met Office normals for 1991–2020 at Winterbourne, on the university campus at 140 metres, give January 7.1°C by day and 1.6°C at night, and July 21.5°C and 12.1°C. The year averages 10.0°C, about 809 mm of rain on about 133 days, and about 1,501 hours of sun. March is driest, about 51 mm, and December wettest, about 84 mm. The campus high is 37.4°C, on 19 July 2022, and the low in that series is −14.3°C.

July and August are the easiest months for roadwork. December to February are cold and wet, but gyms do not close. Fightstar’s FSI 157 was set for 10:00 on 14 June 2026 at Fearless, with cash entry of £20 for adults, £13 for under-15s and £10 for spectators. K-Star’s Amateur Fight League, a step up from interclubs, has listed £20 tickets for a card of Perry Barr, city, Sheldon, Legacy, Aldridge and Walsall fighters. The page named no date beyond a later October show, so check before you travel.

What it costs

The gym pages checked in September 2026 sell monthly memberships, not a listed drop-in.

K-Star lists adults at £65 a month by direct debit, with no contract, a free uniform and Apollo Gym included. Ages 6–16 are £55, or £45 on Saturday only. A family rate is £120 a month after joining fees of £65 and £55.

Fearless lists adults at £75 a month on a 12-month contract, plus a £45 joining fee for the licence and a year’s insurance. That buys Thai boxing, wrestling, BJJ, MMA, boxing and open training. Students are £65. An adult year paid up front is £825, with the joining fee dropped.

Cobra, Black Widow, K-Star and Fearless list one-to-one sessions but no private price. A free first lesson is not a paid private.

A June 2026 Accommodation BID comparison put Birmingham at 21,116 rooms, 74.9% occupancy and an average daily rate of £90.42. HotelsCombined, on 25 September 2026, put a recent average nearer £107 a night, about £86 in July and £137 in March. Listed examples that day ran from an airport Travelodge at about £27 and a central Travelodge at about £33 to Premier Inn Broad Street at about £52 and Malmaison at about £85. Those are advertised rates.

Where fighters stay

Digbeth and Broad Street suit K-Star on MacDonald Street. Hockley suits Fearless, Nechells suits Cobra, and Ward End suits Black Widow, which is a longer ride from New Street. Stay in Perry Barr only if that is the gym. For two gyms, use New Street or Broad Street and travel out.

How to choose a gym

• Check the contract. K-Star’s £65 is advertised with none. Fearless’s £75 is 12 months, plus a joining fee.
• Ask what is included. Fearless names Thai boxing, grappling and open training. Others do not.
• Watch a class: beginners kept separate, pads with a coach, sparring optional.
• Get any private rate and insurance fee in writing, and ask which show the gym enters.
• Time the trip at class hour. Perry Barr, Nechells, Hockley and Ward End are different commutes.
