The Newcastle Muay Thai scene

Muay Thai Newcastle is a Wallsend fight gym, a Walkergate school, an Ouseburn centre and a city-centre club. There is no weekly stadium.

Newcastle Fighters opened in 2018 under Connor Brown and Marianne Barrett at Unit 1–3 Brentwood Grove, Wallsend, NE28 6PT. In February 2025 the Chronicle described a 6,000 sq ft room, over 50 members, and two teenagers picked for a self-funded Team GB trip to Verona, because Muay Thai was not then recognised by Sport England. The gym later won the 2026 North Tyneside Positive Change award.

All-levels Muay Thai is Monday and Wednesday at 18:30. Beginners are Tuesday at 19:00. Friday at 18:30 is sparring and clinch. Morning pro work is invite-only and not for beginners; under-16s in it have no head contact. Privates have no printed fee.

Universal Martial Arts, Unit B7, Benfield Business Park, Benfield Road, Walkergate, NE6 4NQ, has taught for over 30 years. From age 14, beginners’ and regular Muay Thai run Tuesday and Thursday at 17:45 and 18:45, with Friday beginners at 18:00 and optional Saturday sparring at 11:00. New members get a free week.

Team Phoenix, 51A Lime Street, Ouseburn, NE1 2PQ, runs 75-minute Muay Thai with pads and sparring. Yell lists a free week; the class page prints no fee. The Advanced Fighting Centre, 10 High Bridge, NE1 1EN, teaches Thai boxing with kickboxing, boxing and MMA, and prints prices on its homepage.

A December 2025 post for BKB Gym, Percy Main, St John’s Green, North Shields, NE29 6HS, listed Thai and K1 on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, and priced boxing at £5 without a separate Thai fee. Newcastle Fight Centre, Unit A4, Union Street, Shieldfield, NE2 1AH, near Manors, lists Muay Thai with BJJ and boxing. Its April 2026 post limited cash to a £10 day pass.

When to go

Tynemouth is the Met Office station for this coast, covering Wallsend and North Shields. For 1991–2020, January averages about 7.4°C by day and 2.5°C at night, and July about 18.4°C and 12.5°C. Rain is about 608 mm a year. February is driest, about 41 mm, and November wettest, about 71 mm. Summers stay cool. Gyms run in January.

Shows are single dates. Muay Thai TV records a WBC European-title bout at Vertu Motors Arena on 18 October 2025, won by Aline Seiberth. Newcastle Fighters will pass on its own dates. An arena poster may not be Muay Thai: Utilita Arena lists bare-knuckle BKB 60 for 10 October 2026, and BKFC sold out a bare-knuckle card there on 14 March 2026.

What it costs

Newcastle Fighters is £10 a class for adults, £8 for ages 13 to 17 and £5 for ages 5 to 12. Monthly direct debit is £68 for adults and £58 for teens. A family discount is on request. Privates have no published rate.

Universal Martial Arts lists sessions from £5, and adult kickboxing from £5, after a free week. Under-13s are £4. It prints no Muay Thai-only price and no private rate.

The Advanced Fighting Centre is £9 for a members-only adult class, £10 to try, £32 for four and £62 for eight. Unlimited training, excluding ninjutsu, is £120 a month, beside a £35 yearly adult membership. A private is £40, paid in advance.

Team Phoenix and BKB do not print a Thai session price. Fight Centre’s cash day pass is £10.

Trivago puts a typical Newcastle night at about £90, usually £48 to £177: about £77 in December, £109 in June, and about £92 in September 2026.

Where fighters stay

A city-centre room covers High Bridge, Ouseburn and Shieldfield on foot or a short Metro ride, and still reaches Walkergate and Wallsend by Metro or bus. Stay in Wallsend only for Brentwood Grove, and in North Shields only for Percy Main. Book the centre if you are trying more than one gym.

How to choose a gym

  • Compare £10 in Wallsend, from £5 in Walkergate, £9 for High Bridge members and £10 cash in Shieldfield. Wallsend direct debit is £68. High Bridge also lists £120 a month and a separate £35 yearly membership.
  • Beginners are Tuesday at 19:00 in Wallsend, and Tuesday, Thursday and Friday in Walkergate. Pro rounds are invite-only. The only published private is £40.
  • If the poster says Utilita Arena, it may be bare knuckle, not Muay Thai.

July and August are mildest at Tynemouth, and still cool by evening. February is driest and November wettest. Trivago puts hotels lowest in December and highest in June.

Is there a fight every week?

No. The dated Muay Thai arena card was 18 October 2025 at Vertu Motors Arena. The Utilita Arena bill on 10 October 2026 is bare knuckle.
