Muay Thai in Phuket: Which Area to Train

On this page · 8 sections

Phuket has more foreigner-facing Muay Thai gyms than anywhere else in Thailand, and our Phuket directory lists close to a hundred. That choice is the island's main strength and its main problem: the gyms are spread across very different areas, and the area you pick shapes your trip as much as the gym does. This guide breaks the island into its training zones and explains how to choose between them.

Gym details below come from our directory and from each gym's own website, checked in September 2026. We have not trained at these gyms; use this as a research shortlist and confirm prices and schedules directly before booking.

The quick version

  • Soi Ta-iad and Chalong: the main training strip, big camps, the most people training. Best for a first trip where you want structure and company.
  • Rawai: further south, a mix of large multi-discipline camps and smaller Muay Thai gyms, close to Nai Harn beach.
  • Kata and Karon: beach towns with gyms that suit a training-plus-holiday trip.
  • Patong: nightlife, long-running local gyms and a stadium. Good if you want city energy, less good if you want quiet.
  • The north and east (Bang Tao, Surin, Kamala, Phuket Town side): fewer gyms, quieter beaches, more of a normal Thai town feel on the east side.

Soi Ta-iad and Chalong

Soi Ta-iad is a road in Chalong in the south of the island, and in our directory it has more listed gyms than any other single street in Phuket. It is the base of Tiger Muay Thai, a large multi-discipline camp that our directory lists with beginner classes and a fight team. On the same road our listings include Dragon Muay Thai, Apollo Camp, Rattachai Muay Thai, Phuket Top Team, T&Y Muay Thai and Phuket Muay Thai House. Elsewhere in Chalong are Suwit Muay Thai, Eagle Muay Thai, Yak Yai Muay Thai and Phuket Fight Club.

Suwit is a useful example of the smaller end of the market: it advertises a one-month package of 11,000 baht including a private room, or 9,000 baht for training only, with twice-daily sessions and classes of one to five students, at the time of writing (September 2026) (Suwit Muay Thai).

Suits: first-timers, people who want lots of classes to choose from and other foreigners to train with. Drawbacks: it is built around training tourism, so it can feel like a fitness resort rather than Thailand, and the big camps get busy in high season.

Rawai

Rawai is at the southern tip of the island, a short ride from Chalong. It has two very different kinds of gym. AKA Thailand, Southside MMA and Absolute MMA Thailand are multi-discipline camps. Sinbi Muay Thai, which our directory lists with a fight team, Keh Muay Thai, Uppercuts Muay Thai and Srichan Muay Thai are more Muay Thai-focused.

Powerhouse Phuket describes itself as being in Rawai between Nai Harn and Kata beaches. It says it arranges amateur fights at local stadiums once the owner judges a student ready, and that its high-season packages (November to April) are capped and need booking ahead. At the time of writing it says training is temporarily at Srichan Muay Thai during renovations (Powerhouse Phuket).

Suits: people who want a slightly quieter base than Soi Ta-iad but still want choice, and anyone interested in MMA or BJJ alongside Muay Thai.

Kata and Karon

The west-coast beach towns of Kata and Karon have a handful of gyms. Naka Muay Thai says it offers daily classes for complete beginners through to competitors, plus on-site accommodation, pick-up and motorbike rental (Naka Muay Thai). Mai Karon Muay Thai and Chang Gym (Kata) are also in the area in our listings.

Suits: a holiday with training in it, especially for couples or groups where not everyone trains.

Patong

Patong is Phuket's busiest resort town. It has some of the island's longest-established gyms. Petchnumnoi Muay Thai Gym says it was founded in 1971 and runs morning and afternoon sessions Monday to Saturday (Petchnumnoi). Rachai Muay Thai on Nanai Road describes itself as family-owned for more than 20 years and open to complete beginners and working fighters (Rachai Muay Thai). Our directory also lists Ultra Phuket Muaythai and Titan Fight Club in Patong.

Patong is also home to Bangla Boxing Stadium, which sells ringside and stadium seats through its own site; check there for the current fight schedule and prices.

Suits: people who want nightlife and a busy town. Drawbacks: noise, prices and crowds, and it is a drive from the Chalong camps if you want to switch.

The north-west coast and the east side

The northern beaches are quieter. Bangtao Muay Thai & MMA says it is under ten minutes' walk from Bang Tao Beach, runs Muay Thai, MMA, BJJ and fitness classes with beginner packages, and has on-site rooms (Bangtao Muay Thai). Further along the coast are Revolution Muay Thai and Surin Phuket Muay Thai in Surin, Kamala Muay Thai in Kamala and Pasakthong Muay Thai in Choeng Thale.

On the east side, Sumalee Boxing Gym in Si Sunthon is listed in our directory as a camp with a fight team, and Jaroenthong Muay Thai Phuket and Tao Muay Thai Gym are nearer Phuket Town.

Suits: longer stays, people who want quiet, and anyone who wants their beach days away from the southern crowds.

How to choose

  1. Pick the area first. Decide whether you want a training strip, a beach town or somewhere quiet, then shortlist gyms within walking distance of where you will sleep. If you would need a scooter, remember gov.uk says you must wear a helmet and carry both your UK licence and a 1968 international driving permit (gov.uk safety advice).
  2. Match the gym to your goal. Beginners do well at gyms that state they run structured beginner classes; would-be fighters should look for a listed fight team and ask how bouts are arranged. Our guide to choosing a camp and the camp finder quiz help narrow it down.
  3. Check the season. Gov.uk puts Thailand's rainy season at roughly May to October (gov.uk safety advice); some camps, like Powerhouse, treat November to April as high season and cap numbers. See the best time of year to train in Thailand.
  4. Compare total cost, not the class price. Rooms, food and transport vary more between areas than training fees do. The Thailand cost guide has published prices across the country.
