History of Muay Thai
Last reviewed 10 Oct 2026
Nai Khanom Tom is a legend, not a date you can put on a timeline. The stadium era is on firmer ground: Rajadamnern's own site says 1945, and Lumpinee opened on 8 Dec 1956 before moving to Ram Inthra in February 2014. IFMA received full International Olympic Committee recognition on 20 July 2021. Full recognition is not the same as a medal event on the Olympic programme. Muay Thai is not an Olympic medal sport.
Key facts:
- Legend stays labelled as legend.
- Rope-bound hands (kard chuek, คาดเชือก) gave way to gloves. Thai Wikipedia, read 10 Oct 2026, places that change in the early reign of Rama VII and does not print a calendar year.
- Rajadamnern, stadium site, read 10 Oct 2026: opened 1945, 3,500 seats.
- Lumpinee: 1956 on Rama IV, last fights there in early February 2014, official opening at Ram Inthra 28 Feb 2014 (Wikipedia and Bangkok Post).
- IOC Executive Board, 10 June 2021, recommended full recognition. The 138th IOC Session in Tokyo granted it on 20 July 2021. IFMA's own statement says so. Provisional recognition was in 2016.
A ring, not a claimed historical photo
What we will not pretend to know
Origin stories that start in a particular century and a particular battlefield are retold constantly. We do not have an academic monograph in the sources for this page, so we will not pick a founding king or a battle. The useful history for a traveller and a new student is the bit that changes what you watch and what you are allowed to do in a ring.

Wai Kru and Ram Muay
Before the first round, IFMA requires every athlete to perform the Wai Kru. The mongkon is worn for the ritual and then removed. IFMA's coach guidance limits the ritual to two minutes for seniors and one minute for youth. Ram Muay is the dance that goes with the homage. It is not a warm-up you skip because the bus was late, in an IFMA bout. A gym class may teach a short version. That is the gym's culture, not the IFMA clock.
Recognition is not a medal
Full IOC recognition lets a federation sit inside the Olympic system. It does not put a gold medal bout on the programme. Anyone who writes "Muay Thai is in the Olympics" without that distinction is wrong. Check the Olympic sports list if you need the programme for a given Games. We are not citing a medal event because there is not one to cite.

FAQs
Who invented Muay Thai?
We will not name a founder. Nai Khanom Tom is a legend and is labelled as one here, not as a dated fact. Battlefield origin stories are widely retold; we could not tie them to an academic source. The history we can date starts with gloves replacing rope, stadiums in 1945 and 1956, and IFMA's Olympic recognition in 2021. That recognition is not a medal event.
When did Muay Thai fighters start wearing gloves?
Thai Wikipedia's Muay Thai article, read 10 Oct 2026, says that early in the reign of Rama VII fights still used rope-bound hands, and that gloves replaced rope after a fatal bout. The article does not print a calendar year, so neither do we. Rajadamnern's own site dates the stadium to 1945. We did not open a primary decree.
Is Muay Thai an Olympic sport?
IFMA has full IOC recognition, granted on 20 July 2021 at the 138th IOC Session in Tokyo. The Executive Board recommended it on 10 June 2021. Provisional recognition was in 2016. Full recognition is not a place on the medal programme. Do not write that Muay Thai is an Olympic medal sport. Check the programme for a given Games if you need that list.
What is the Wai Kru?
A ritual required before round one under IFMA rules. The mongkon is worn for it. IFMA coach guidance allows up to two minutes for seniors and one minute for youth. Ram Muay is the movement that accompanies the homage. A gym may teach a short form. An IFMA bout uses the IFMA limit.
